My name is Derrick Chalfant and I currently live in Hickory, NC. I am an untrained artist and I identify my style of painting as 'primitive modernism.'

        About six years ago the idea that art was 'supposed to be' or needed to look a certain way was replaced by the simple idea that art is 'whatever I want it to be.' There is no wrong way to creatively express oneself because art is as individual as people. Art is conceived through inspiration and born in the imagination. My version of success concerning this creative path will be achieved by reaching my fullest potential as a person and an artist. When I paint, I am fascinated by how simple application of color to the canvas can transform the visual dynamic of a piece, bringing it to life. I am inspired by the colors and imagery that I see in everyday life and other visual artists such as Pablo Picasso, Eric Carl, Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Richard Pousette-Dart and Bob Ross. I continue to enjoy an overall positive response from the surrounding counties where I display my work, as well as through social media. I look forward to further developing my skill as a painter by learning something new from each piece. I am excited to discover where this journey will take me and meeting the people along the way who identify with my expression.
